It is a truly colorful world of animals, full of bright colors and an almost contagious happiness that opens up to the visitor in the entrance area of the parish chancellery in tschirn. This "paradise of animals" is seven and a half by three meters in size – so the appropriate title of the mural – the most different kinds of animals.
It was created by the artist hubert weber (1920 – 2013) from lichtenfels – known as the "painter without hand" – in 1963 in encaustic-technique (wax-smooth-painting). Unfortunately, the painting shows inexplicable serious damage, the causes of which have not yet been adequately explained.
"The mural in tschirn inspires me with its colors and great atmospheres", district curator of local history robert wachter swarmed. Just look at the depiction of the tiger on the tree in front of this coarse sun disk – surrounded by a red, blue and violet colored sky -, below it the lowen. Or the baren in front of the bird’s nest on the tree, or the funny monkey hanging on the branch with the parrot and fooling around with the goat and the dog.
"There is just generally a rough harmony between all animal species, whereby I personally find the left part of the picture with the tiger particularly successful and already", wachter states.
Paint flakes off
Unfortunately, the artwork in the building, which was built in 1962/63 as an elementary school and is now used as the municipal chancellery, is suffering from rough chipping of paint sections on the lower right part of the picture. For this reason, the district curator of local history had made it one of "his" program points restorers tour on saturday together with the renowned restorers melissa speckhardt from nurnberg as well as bruno fromm from parsberg in the list of the endangered "art on the building" in the county. Further stations were the school in kups as well as the former schools in reichenbach and hesselbach, whose "animal worlds-wall painting on the first floor is probably the original type of tschirner artwork.
"It would be important to find or relaunch sponsors or sponsorship programs for the mural in tschirn, which would roughly subsidize the renovation of this great mural", wachter makes clear that the renovation will certainly not be cheap. This was also confirmed by the two restorers.
In the workshop of bruno fromm, for example, the rough monumental painting of the venus grotto in the park of linderhof palace was restored. His father used to do "art on building" himself which is why the preservation of such works of art is also close to his personal heart.
Efforts so far without success
Melissa speckhardt, a graduate restorer at the university of bamberg, studied female sculptures and furnishings from the 17th century. Until 19. After completing her doctorate in eighteenth-century art and its technologies, she was involved for many years with wachter in a project on the digital reconstruction of the colored settings of the sculpture and architecture of the cathedral in regensburg. You and the district curator also have the same "doctor father", prof. Achim hubel. Her last major project – from 2011 to 2018 – was the restoration supervision of the lodge house of the world cultural heritage "margraviate opera house bayreuth" inne.
Tschirn’s mayor klinger is very grateful for the commitment of the district curator of local history and the two restorers. With their commitment to the preservation of "art in architecture you are formally open doors with him; after all, he had already made great efforts in the past to restore the work of art – but so far, unfortunately, without success.
Hoping for forderer
"I care very much about this picture. I went to this school myself and have many fond memories of it", tells the mayor. Unfortunately, this is not so easy from a financial point of view. I hope very much that there will be a demand for the preservation and restoration of these animal worlds as well as other such "art on building" otherwise many such works of art could not be preserved by the communities.
For him it is also about the idealistic value, so klinger. "We, as a small community, can be very proud to have such a work of art, which can certainly be described as historical. For me, the painting is a piece of art that should simply be preserved", hopes the mayor.
This is also the view of the district’s local curator. It is good that this foyer or the break hall of the former school is still quite original in every detail, which is why the wall painting is still in an authentic context. The next step is to estimate the cost of restoration.
